to me May 2023 | Downtown Alpena Newsletter Is there anything better than springtime in Downtown Alpena? Buds are on the trees, the fountain is in at Culligan Plaza, planters are filled with flowers, and downtown seems to come alive again with the promise of another busy summer. At the DDA Office, we are gearing up for our new event, the first-ever Alpena Flower Festival that is next weekend on Friday, June 2 & Saturday, June 3. Over thirty downtown businesses have sponsored installations made of fresh florals by four amazing florists. From colorful swags on business' doors to large photo-ops in Culligan Plaza and the alleyway, you are going to be amazed at the amount of fresh flowers downtown. We have a full schedule of events planned  with the help of our partners: live music with the Street Performers, workshops at Art in the Loft, a storytime and floral crown craft at the library, a poetry walk & open-mic night with The Poetics Lab and more! The installations are completed at 4 pm on Friday and the festival wraps up with an alleyway party on Saturday from 6-8 pm with music from the Dan White Quartet and a special live painting with Mariah Brancheau from Lovely Little Lettering Co. Wear your best florals, grab a cocktail, and enjoy downtown decked out with flowers (I know I will). Flowers seems to be the theme of the last few weeks. 10 new flower planters arrived that are rented to downtown businesses. 2400 begonia plugs were planted by over 20  volunteers last weekend. Hanging flower baskets arrive next week, as will planters planted by Pied Piper students for the alleyway. Tis the season in Downtown Alpena! After a slow winter, we are looking forward to welcoming you back downtown and hope you'll join us at the Flower Festival next weekend and support our downtown businesses. Flower Fest Map + Schedule Downtown Updates The Sanctuary Cinema is now open Downtown Alpena has a movie theatre again! Congrats to the Sanctuary Cinema (Alpena Marc & the Konczak Family) on a beautiful restoration. The cinema, located at 101 S. Second Ave., opened to the public on May 19. Over 20 volunteers helped plant flowers that were generously sponsored by over 40 community members and businesses. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped beautify downtown! Welcome Illuminate Wellness to Downtown Alpena    Located at 112 Water St., Illuminate Wellness promotes health and well being— physically, mentally and emotionally. Their storefront offers a variety of crystals, stones, essential oils, and other items to promote health and well-being.
